So will I need specific audit qualifications?
The main accounting qualification in Germany is the Wirtschaftsprüfer. Although this qualification is held in high regard due to the fact that it takes a number of years to achieve qualification it is likely that only the more experienced auditors with have such a status.
It is quite usual for students of the Wirtschaftsprüfer to first undertake the
‘Steuerberater’ , which is a chartered German tax qualification, comprising three written examinations and one oral examination.
Instead of taking the WP qualification some German external auditors elect to undertake the American CPA qualification instead.
For those undertaking the CIA more information can be found at the Deutschen Institut für Interne Revision which was established 1958 and has over 2000 members out of all areas of the economy, science and administration.
For those wishing to undertake the CISA qualification more information can be found at the German chapter of ISACA.
