Where are most of the audit jobs?

Portugal has become an increasingly service-based economy since joining the European Community in 1986. Over the past two decades, successive governments have privatized many state-controlled firms and liberalized key areas of the economy, including the financial and telecommunications sectors. Like other countries in Southern Europe Portugal has been affected by the financial crisis and jobs opportunities for auditors in Portugal are somewhat limited. The Major cities are Lisbon (the capital and largest city) and Porto - these represent the best locations to find work.

What kind of life can I expect?

The cost of living in Portugal has risen considerably in the last decade or so and in the major cities is now around the EU average, although it’s still relatively low in rural areas. Prices of goods have risen but salaries rise to keep pace with inflation. Prices of commodities, accommodation and leisure are slightly lower than in the UK.

What kind of job titles should I look out for when searching for a job?

Different companies may give different job titles but when looking for a new job you will probably want to look out for the following such as Auditor Interno, Auditor Interno Junior, Auditor Interno Sênior, Auditor Contábil Interno, Auditor Controler Internos/Processos

What kinds of audit jobs are available?

Most major international companies will have a presence in Portugal. There are some international focused Portuguese businesses who will have opportunities for internal auditors also.

So will I need specific audit qualifications?

For those wishing to undertake a CIA qualification should look at Portugal’s chapter of the IIA. For IT auditors the new chapter of ISACA is in Lisbon, Portugal, with almost 200 members.
